It’s sort of weird to think that the series has been around for so long.
I still remember when it came out. I was 8 around that time. I saw the commercial on TV a lot since I used to watch the Disney channel all the time. My first impression of it was pretty sad actually. I was like: that’s so stupid! Putting Disney characters with these weirdos! At that time I had no clue that Final Fantasy was in the games, and I wouldn’t know for another few years(At that point my only exposure to the FF series was through some old ROMs my Dad got me of FF 4, 5 and 6). I sort of forgot about the game for a while and didn’t think much about it for a few years. At the time it didn’t even matter if I wanted the game or not because I didn’t even own a PS2 at that point.
A few years later when Chain of Memories came out I got a bit more curious about the games. I bought Chain of Memories because f.y.e. didn’t have LoZ:Minish Cap at the time I really wanted a new game for my Game Boy SP. Boy was I glad I did that. I figured I could get into the series by playing it since from what I had heard it was a replay of the first game, but with a new fighting system.
You can bet I was a bit confused by the whole thing at first. But I fell in love with Sora and Riku. But I didn’t beat the game until much, much later (after I finished KH2 I’ll admit) I rented the first game and I will freely admit I got really discouraged by the Destiny Islands part of the game since I couldn’t catch those damn fish! But I had to give the game back and that was the end of that!
When the second game came out I had the commercial music stuck in my head for ages. I saved up my referee money to buy the game the summer after it came out. I played it pretty much non-stop to beat it and I was hooked forever. I bought the first game and whenever I’m in a bad mood I sit down and work on tackling it. I still haven’t beaten it all the way through on hard mode, but I enjoy using it as a stress reliever.
Then with Re:CoM I was super excited to enjoy the old game that got me into the franchise in a new way. Re:CoM is on my list of PS2 games to beat on hard mode too right now, but I think the installments that are really important to me are 358/2 Days and BbS. 358/2 was important because Roxas is my favorite character and I found a new love in Xion and a newfound respect in Axel.
BbS I bought a WHOLE NEW CONSOLE for! I bought a PSP simply to play it. I don’t regret it either because it was so amazing.
So with the release of Kingdom Hearts 3D I see myself buying a 3DS soon too!
But I really can’t say how much this fanchise has given me. Great memories, amazing friends, characters that I will love forever, and my first serious cosplay.
But yeah. Kingdom Hearts gives me too many feelings and I can’t express enough how much I love these games.
So Thanks You Kingdom Hearts. For everything you have done for me, including giving me more reasons to love Disney and a reason to look into the other Final Fantasy games.
